Fashion Personnel Monthly Pulse: November 2010
Joanne and I recently attended the annual FINZ Conference and were really fascinated by one of the speakers (Robert Buckingham, who is associated with The Future Laboratory) who was talking predominantly about trends in retail during the current decade, a time which he is referring to as ‘The Turbulent Teens.’ He had a lot of new jargon, some interesting turns of phrase and the odd acronym thrown in as well – there was so much that I didn’t manage to write it all down, but these are the ones that resonated the most with us:
Clicks and Mortar – the combination of an e-commerce website and traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ retail
Word of Mouse – the spreading of information via e-mail, internet and social media
Bleisure – the blurring of business and leisure time with the advent of hand-held, internet capable tools such as the i-phone.
ROPO – Research online, purchase offline. Apparently 50% of us now purchase products this way.
Edutailing – Online education.
Magtailing – Online magazines
Blogtailing – Online editorial
Untethered Retail – pop-up stores, swap-up shops (where whole stores are swapped with another store for a short period of time) and the use of abandoned spaces, all creating temporary retail opportunities.
He also talked about some interesting retail examples such as the café in Paris called ‘The Sweatshop Café’, where you can rent sewing machines by the hour, and the on-line fashion label which is only available to those who give blood!
And then to top it all off a nice quote – “Leadership is no longer being King of the Mountain, but Centre of the Circle.”

“Out of recession but still not free of the fear of it.”
This is a quote I heard at the recent FINZ conference, which I thought pretty much summed up the state of the industry at the moment. We are still experiencing a great deal of nervousness from our clients, who are unsure whether to increase their staff levels, or whether to replace individuals when they leave. Many of our clients are waiting on orders, or waiting out the season to see what the next one brings before they make any permanent decisions. We are moving into a busier recruitment period now (historically) and we have seen a few more vacancies becoming available – the lead up to the Christmas period is generally a time of movement as people line up new opportunities to start the New Year – so whilst the future isn’t looking rosy just yet, there is a decidedly pink tinge to it – we’ll call it blush!

I can liken the end of winter for recruitment to a sailor being becalmed. When a sailor is becalmed, he sits in his yacht, unable to do anything, hoping that a breath of wind will come soon to fill his sails. The end of winter for recruitment is very similar – we sit and wait as not much really happens, waiting for the weather to get warmer and people to get motivated again. The good news is that the end of winter means the beginning of spring and that great lead up to summer. All of a sudden the motivation to do things kicks in again – and that means movement on the job front, which means vacancies to fill. So now’s the time to dust off that resume, flash it up a little and get it to us so that we can keep a look out for you.

One would think it would start to quiet down as we get into the thick of winter, but surprisingly we still have some really interesting roles on our books. We continue to do more in the Retail sector with exciting roles in planning and buying; and as always we are on the hunt for technical people for Garment Tech, Spec Tech and offshore Production roles. Our most interesting role this month? It would have to be for a Shoe Buyer – now I know that we are all shoe buyers, but this role is buying shoes for the masses, in a fresh new dynamic team. So if you are a buyer currently and are keen to have a look at a new category, checkout Ref 2275.
